Obituary from the Yankton Press and Dakotan, Yankton, SD 57078 Erma Book Wakonda- Erma Estella Sparks Book, 94, Wakonda, died Tuesday (Oct. 3, 2000) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Friday, at the First Lutheran Church, Wakonda. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, in Riverside Cemetery, at Pierre. Hansen Funeral Home, Irene, is in charge of arrangements. She was born at Willow Lake, in 1906, to Wm. L. and Elva E. (Kelley) Sparks. She spent most of her time outside helping him on their farm and riding her favorite pony. As a young person, she joined a wild west show, where she was paid to ride he horse around the arena in the show as it traveled to many cities in the East. She worked hard to care for he young daughter and her parents during the Depression. She was fortunate to get a job with the state. She married Eustace 'Pinky' Book in 1941 at Ft. Pierre. Her husband died in 1962. They were avid gardeners, growing 1,200 tomato plants as well as other fruits and vegetables to sell. They both worked for many years in the Stanley county court house. In 1960, they purchased the Hughes County Abstract company. She continued this upon her husband's death, and later went to work for the South Dakota Department of School and Public Lands. After retiring, she moved to Wakonda, where her children were located. She lived for 25 years in an upstairs apartment, and was very proud to remain independent throughout her 94 years. She gave much to her family and continued to make goodies to send home to her families. She is survived by two children: Ruth (James) Williams and Ed (Trudy) Book, Wakonda; 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one daughter and one granddaughter. Buried Pierre cemetery 3rd turn to left, Add B, blk 7.[1]
