Charles Alvin Sparling was born on 24 Apr 1889 in Wakefield, Gogebic, Michigan, his father, John Dalmage Sparling (1860-1935) and his mother, Mary Ann Riley (1860-1943). He married Lulu Bell on 21 Apr 1914 in Tenino, Thurston, Washington. He then married Clara French McKeen (1901–1987) on 11 Mar 1922 in King, Washington. He died on 5 May 1963 in King, Washington and buried in Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park, Seattle, King County, Washington.
