Biography

Patrick Milton Speed, the son of Felix Speed and Hester Langston, was born 17 February 1851 in Covington, Mississippi and he passed away 18 February 1933 in Sayre, Beckham County, Oklahoma. He is buried in the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery in Sayre, Oklahoma. [1]

In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Beat 5 Ocoha, Covington County, Mississippi the family is listed as:

  • Washington Speed, a farmer, age 47 from Mississippi,
  • Hester age 47 from Mississipi,
  • Patrick M. Speed age 18 from Mississippi,
  • James age 17 from Mississippi,
  • Elam age 15 from Mississippi,
  • Mahaley age 12 from Mississippi,
  • Charity age 12 from Mississippi,
  • Isabel age ten from Mississippi,
  • Felix age seven from Mississippi, and
  • William age one from Mississippi.[2]

P.M. Speed and A.E. Burleson were married 11 January 1877 in Freeston, Texas.[3]

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Wortham, Freestone County, Texas, shows the family as:

  • Funeral services are held Sunday for retired banker at First Baptist Church...Mr. Speed died of complications incident to his advanced age Saturday afternoon at his home...his body was laid to rest following a Masonic burial ceremony in the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery...Mr. Speed had lived in Sayre the past three years.
