Biography

John Spencer, son of Ensign Caleb Spencer of Saybrook, was born in Saybrook, Conn., March 14,1721, and died at Clinton (previously Killingsworth), Conn., in 1809. His estate was administered on June 6, 1809. He married first, Abigail Chatfield, widow of John Buell sometime before 1756. She was older than John and died in 1778. John married second, Martha Wilcox (1762-1788) in Killingworth in 1783. They had one child, John (1784-1838). John, senior, married third, Dothy Stevens (1762-1835) at Clinton on July 16, 1788. They had six children: Elias, James, Joseph, Benjamin, Hannah and Stephen.
