Biography

Gentleman, of Hodsock Priory, of the Parish of Blyth, Nottinghamshire.

Background

He was the son of Robert Spencer and Mary Furness, widow of Mr Marsh and of Thomas Herrot of Thorpe-in-Balne, Barnby upon Don, Yorkshire. He was baptised on 17 October 1735 at Barnby upon Don, Yorkshire. Robert, son of Robert Spencer, Gentleman.[1]

Family history

His grandson, Rev Richard Taylor, recorded that "The Spencer family had lands at Barnby Dun, Sheffield, Rotherham, and also at Selby near Tickhill, and are most probably the same stock as the Spencers of Bramley Grange and Attercliffe Hall, near Sheffield, as they had lands in the same parts and were allied to several branches of the Taylor family as well as the Spencers of Hodsock. The Barnby Dun estate was sold for £7,000 which was thought to be much below it's real value.

"My great-grandfather Spencer was twice related to the Duke of Marlborough, but how I know not."

Marriage and family

On 23 July 1764 he married Dorothy Stovin, the 4th daughter of Jonathan Stovin and Dorothy Hartshorne, and they had eight daughters and three sons.

23 July 1764 - Robert Spencer, Gentleman, of the Parish of Blyth and Dorothy Stovin, of Bawtry, by William Hunter, Curate, by Licence. Witnesses, Mary Stovin [the bride's sister-in-law], James Barker.

Inheritance

In 1765 he and his brother John each inherited £22,000 from their father.

Death and burial

He died on 28 September 1794 at Hodsock Priory. He was buried in Blyth Church, Nottinghamshire. His widow died in 1815 and was buried with him.
