Biography

Mary Adelaide Spencer was born Nov 26, 1840 in South Manchester, MA, the daughter of Owen or Oscar Spencer and Mary H Pitkin of Connecticut. She married Henry Francis Hills, a straw goods manufacturer, on Sept 17, 1863 and they had five children: Leonard M, Mary P, Emily A, Caroline C and Susan C. Mary died June 11 1910 in Amherst

She was known as Adelaide in the Hills family. Her mother died when Adelaide and her sister were quite young. The children were raised by "Grandma Pitkin" (Mary Hollister Pitkin). In 1893, Addie S Hills wrote down the history of a highboy and a linen wheel that came to her through her grandmother's family. The note has been kept in a drawer of the highboy ever since. It reads:

"This 'Highboy' belonged to a Mrs. Forbes of South Glastonbury - 1750 in 1800 was given to my great, great Grandmother Hollister with $500.00 "The linen wheel was bought for Aunt Harriet Hollister year 1818 Grandmother Hollister + my Grandmother Pitkin spun the linen thread for her sheets and pillowcases when she was married. "Grandmother Pitkin born 1798 Aug. 30th. "Addie S. Hills. 1893"

Spencer-11951 and Spencer-11798 appear to represent the same person because: Clear Duplicate. Rest of family to be merged as well
Spencer-11850 and Spencer-11798 appear to represent the same person because: Various Mass. vital statistics records for Mary show her father's name as Oscar; but the head stone photo is very clearly "Owen".
