Biography

There were at least two men who were named Moses Spencer and who were born in Eastern Eleuthera around 1850- 1870, both emmigrated from there to Key West, Fl. It is likely that the two Moseses were 1st or 2nd cousins, named after a common ancestor who was one of the earliest settlers of The Bahamas. Here's a link to the other Moses:https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:EditPerson&u=28594313.

The Moses Spencer of this biography was born 3 Apr 1866, Rock Sound, Eleuthera, Bahamas to Mary Feltcher Carey and John Spencer, his birth record is in The Bahamas Civil Register.[1] An alternate birthdate is 20 Oct 1868.

According to the census of 1910, the Moses Spencer of this record emigrated from the Bahamas to Key West around 1881.

The US Census of 1900 lists Moses as the single brother In Law of Joseph Curtis Watkins Jr. who lived on Elgin Street with his wife Annie Spencer but reports that Moses was born March, 1850 (sic). (Annie was the daughter of John Cornelius Spence and Mary Fletcher Carey)

On 14 Feb 1910, Moses and Lillian Symonette (b in Bahamas abt. 1884) married.

The couple had children:

Irvin P Spencer b 1907 Key West, Fl

Minnie Spencer b 1910, Key West, Fl.

When the 1910 census was taken, Moses Spencer was working as a laborer and he and Lillian lived at 14 Margaret Steet in Key West along with their son Irvin P Spencer. Moses' sister in law Lulu Simonett (sic), a single needle worker born ca 1886 Bahamas also lived with them.

In a directory of 1914, Moses and Lillian lived in the lane at the rear of a house at 115 Fleming St, later referred to as 1116 Stump La. The directory also states that Moses worked as a laborer.

In 1920, 52 yo Moses was listed as a widower, his given birth year was 1868 (sic) and he lived (VERIFY LOCATION JOSEPH W near his relatives (parents)) on a Lane, presumably 1116 Stump La.or Elgin Lane just off Fleming Street, Key West Ward 2, Monroe, Florida, United States. Moses worked as a laborer for the City of Key West and his daughter Minnie, aged 10 resided with Moses.

Moses died on 12 Dec 1924. His death (intestinal cancer) was reported by his sister Annie Spencer Watkins. He was recorded as a widower who lived at the rear of 1120 Elgin Street. His birth was listed as 20 Oct 1868, his father was listed as John C. Spencer and his mother as Mary F. (Watkins)

Moses must have died before 1930 for 1930, Minnie Spencer lived with her Aunt Annie Spencer and Uncle Joseph C Watkins .

At the time of the 1910 census, Moses Spencer, laborer b Bahamas abt 1870 and married to Lillian Simonett b abt 1884, lived at 14 Margaret Steet in Key West.

The census states that Moses immigrated 1881
