Biography

This profile is part of the Spencer Name Study.

Peleg Spencer was born on 23 May 1716 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. [1] He was the son of Peleg Spencer and Elizabeth Coggeshall. [2] Peleg married Audrey Spencer on 27 Oct 1737 at East Greenwich, Rhode Island. [3] They had fourteen children: Amey, Richard, Andrew, Jeremiah, Mary, Elizabeth, Charles Wright, Audrey, Susannah, William, Peleg, Sarah, Rufus and John. Peleg passed away on 20 Sep 1789 at Shaftsbury, Vermont. [4] He was buried in the Spencer Cemetery in Shaftsbury. [5]

Last Will and Testament

In the name of God Amen: I Peleg Spencer of Shaftsbury being through the abundant goodness and mercy of God though weak in body yet of a sound and perfect understanding and memory do constitute this my Last Will and Testament and desire that it may be received all as such:
    First of all I mention the heirs of my daughter Amy Trumble and give the reason why I do not will them their equal parts because I gave it to her before her decease which was her equal part;
    Also I give to my son Andrew Spencer ten dollars to be paid within a year after my decease; and a silver spoon at his mother's decease;
    Also I give to my son Jeremiah Spencer a pair of one year old steers to be delivered to him within one year after my decease; and a silver spoon at his mother's decease;
    Also I give my daughter Mary Oatman a one year old heffer to be delivered within one year from my decease to her and a silver spoon at her mother's decease;
    Also I give to my son Charles Spencer one pair of one year old steers to be delivered to him within a year after my decease and a silver spoon at his mother's decease;
    Also I will that my daughter Audre be made equal with the rest of my daughters as to my estate;
    Also I give to my daughter Susanna Cole a year old heffer to be delivered to her within a year after my decease; and a silver spoon at her mother's decease;
    Also I give to my son William Spencer a silver spoon at his mother's decease and the rest of his part I have given to him by deed;
    Also I give to my son Peleg Spencer all that piece of land that lyeth east of the road which is against the house I now live in and is supposed to be about eighty acres be there more or less it is all that lies east of the road that belongs to hundred acre lot no. twenty six; his paying the equal half of just debts then due;
    Also I give to my son Rufus Spencer fifty Spanish milled dollars to be paid by the executors of this my will within one year and a half after my decease; and a silver spoon at his mother's decease
    Also I give to my beloved wife Adre Spencer while she remains my widow all the tract of land that I own on the west side of the highway which is part of the lot No. twenty six and that fifty acre lot that joins the aforesaid land lying west be there more or less but is supposed to be about seventy acres with the buildings that are on the said land; and my horse sadle and bridle a cow and heffer coming two years old;
    Also I give to my son John Spencer all those lands and buildings and the other [illeg.] that I have mentioned and willed to his mother I will the same to him after her decease or after she should be married to another man and a silver spoon at his mother's decease; he is to take the possession of those moveables and land; I will that what sheeps, hogs and all the farming tools should be equally divided between my two sons Peleg and John.
    Also the moveables of the house after the death of my wife I will to my three daughters except a couple of beds that are filled with [illeg.] hare is to be left for my sons Peleg and John;
    And lastly I make my beloved wife and my son Peleg Spencer my sole executors of this my Last Will hereby enjoining them to execute this will and testament according to the tenor and meaning thereof with the intent that [illeg.] may be done to my heirs after my decease and that the Peace and Blessing of God may be left upon them when I am gone.
    In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty first day of February one thousand seven hundred and eight two.
