Nancy's parentage is uncertain. She was most likely the daughter of Samuel and Nancy Spencer of Carroll County, VA.[1] Samuel & Nancy Spencer lived in the 11th District of Carroll County, VA, as did the parents of Jacob Warren. On the 1850 Census in Surry County, NC, there is another Nancy Spencer, aged 21, living with her widowed mother, Martha.[2] Surry County, North Carolina was adjacent to Carroll County, Virginia, so either Nancy could have known Jake McCraw. Another clue toward our Nancy being the daughter of Samuel Spencer is that his daughter, Sarah, married Francis McCraw in 1862. Did Sarah marry the grandfather of her sister's husband? It is likely, as Jacob W. McCraw was surety on their marriage bond. Finally, since the daughter of Samuel & Nancy Spencer was 20 on the 1850 census, which would have been the correct age for our Nancy at that time, let's go with her being the daughter of Samuel & Nancy Spencer for now. A copy of Samuel Spencer's will would confirm once and for all, but I think we can be confident that the parent's of Nancy Adeline Spencer McCraw were Samuel and Nancy Spencer of Carroll County, VA.
Jacob Warren McCraw obtained a marriage bond in Surry County, NC, on May 21, 1851 to wed Nancy with Francis McCraw as surety. Their children were:
Sabrina Elizabeth
Mordecai
Sarah Ann "Sally"
William Riley
Samuel Jefferson "Sam", b 26 May 1858
Nancy Jane "Sis"
Mary Alice
Jacob Warren "Bonus"
Martha Frances "Fannie"
On the 1900 US Census, Nancy is living in the Stewart's Creek District of Surry County with her son, Samuel, and two grandchildren: Nancy & Mary Eads(?). The census records that she bore 9 children and 8 of them were living in 1900.
Nancy died on February 12, 1902.
