Biography

Uriah Spencer 1770- abt. 1850 It is a fact that Christopher Spencer (Spencer-5886) Born 6 Mar 1748 in Guilford, New Haven, and his wife Olive Stow Spencer (Stow-538) Born 1 Sep 1746 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut is the mother and father of Uriah Spencer born 4 Mar 1770 Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. The Family Tree Y-DNA Test 700 markers, haplogroup E-BY56509, au-DNA and mt-DNA of Frank Maury Spencer (Spencer-7007) does indicate that Olive Stow’s husband Christopher Spencer are the parents of Uriah Spencer and are Frank Maury Spencer’s direct ancestors.

Uriah Spencer was one of the most prominent of the pioneer settlers who came into what is now Lawrence Township, Pa. He arrived in 1794 but did not settle within the borough limits of Tioga until after 1800. He was a blacksmith.

Upon the establishment of the Post Office Jan. 1, 1805, which was named Tioga, he was appointed Postmaster and held the office until July 1, 1809. Mr. Spencer had purchased from the Hon. James Hillhouse of New Haven, Ct. a near relative by marriage and a considerable dealer in Pennsylvania lands, the Connecticut title for the twp. of Hamilton which included a large part of the present Lawrence Twp.

His 1st. wife died in Nov. 1802 & was buried in Lawrenceville Cemetery. She left 4 children, 2 sons & 2 daughters. As early as 1804, he married again, hto Eleanor Boher. She had 7 children, 3 sons & 4 daughters.

His son George held a clerkship in the Post Offlce Department in Washington, D.C, and while on a visit to his son's home la Georgetown about 1850, he died, aged 80 years and was buried there. His widow Eleanor removed to Mainesburg, Pa and died some two years later. Uriah is listed in the 1790 census in Guilford 1-0-2. [1]

Spencer-3805 and Spencer-6037 appear to represent the same person because: Uriah Spencer born March 1770, was married first to Deborah Elliott, after her death Uriah Spencer married Eleanor Boher
