Biography

Roy Broughton's wife, Lucy Spencer, was born to Jerome Bonaparte Spencer, county commissioner and hotel owner in Walker, Minnesota. Her ancestor, Johnson Spencer, arrived in the US from England in 1666. She has nine ancestors who fought in the revolutionary war. Lucy had four brothers, and four sisters. Sisters Emma Jane and Charlotte Edna were sources for her daughter Edna Jane's name, and prominent in Edna's life. Sister Emma applied for and received a grant from Andrew Carnegie Foundation in 1907 to open a library. Lucy's sister Olive taught at the Leech Lake Indian Boarding School. Lucy worked as a cafeteria worker after she left Roy and lived with her daughter Edna the rest of her life and is buried near her.
