The mother of this Jonathan Spencer must have been Hannah, the first wife of Nathaniel Spencer (she died in 1744, probably as a result of childbirth), not Elizabeth Lee.

Hmmm. Well, Jonathan was a man of the frontier and the revolutionary war so he didn't leave a complete and unambiguous genealogical trail. However, Donald L Jacobus wrote the most complete story of the New England Spencer family in the "Four Spencer Brothers" published in the American Genealogist in several sections beginning with Vol 27. At page 182 he writes regarding Jonathan's father: "Nathaniel Spencer ... married first, 26 July 1708, Hannah ____, who died at Haddam, 20 Feb 1741/2; married second, at Haddam, 27 Mar. 1744, Elizabeth Lee ..."

Later, at Vol 30 page 61 he writes regarding Jonathan: " ... Bible record in pension file of his son Orange Spencer, which gives Jonathan's birth date as 17 Mar. 1744, close enough for identification when double-dating of the year is considered; also there is the circumstantial evidence of the names Lee and Nathaniel which appear among Jonathan's children ..."

Nathaniel's first wife, Hannah, died in 1741 when she was age 54, they had seven children, the last being born in 1728. Nathaniel married Elizabeth in 1744 when she was 21 years of age; they had seven children beginning with Jonathan who was born in 1744.

Interesting conundrum isn't it? I merged the duplicate profiles for Elizabeth Lee earlier today, the result of which now has her attached to 2 Nathaniel Spencers (father & son). Noting the 39 year difference in age between the father, born in 1684, vs. Elizabeth, born about 1723, I was skeptical that he was the correct Nathaniel to be her husband with whom he had 7 children...beginning at age 60, and continuing until age 77....after he'd already had 9 children with Hannah...however stranger things have happened. Conversely, if Elizabeth's husband was the son Nathaniel, born 1723, then that tracks counter to the Jacobus article that you mentioned, and which I have no reason to doubt. The reason I posited that Jonathan's mother must have been Hannah is because Nathaniel (whichever one) didn't marry Elizabeth until the 27th of March (per her biography), and Jonathan was born about the 14th of March of the same year; silly me for not believing that such chronology wouldn't be feasible back in the 1740s & all. It does appear, though, that Hannah had died 3 years earlier (1741), so in view of that factoid you probably should just ignore my original message and have a good remainder of your day regarding Jonathan. Perhaps, though, you might be able to assist with detaching the wrong Nathaniel from Elizabeth so that we can allow this remarkable family to rest in well deserved peace(!).

Thanks & regards, John

Hmmm. Not really a conundrum, perhaps a "SNAFU" as we used to say back in US Navy days. Nathaniel (1723-1809) was the son of Nathaniel (1684-1761) and his first wife, Hannah. Thus the younger Nathaniel was the stepson of Elizabeth Lee.

You should try to back out all of these changes as soon as possible.

No, that's not correct, Michael. The issue is that somebody (not me) who built one of the Elizabeth Lee profiles connected her with Nathaniel the son, i.e. the wrong one. A different person connected the same Elizabeth Lee (but under a different profile) with Nathaniel the father, i.e. the right one. Once the merge of the 2 Elizabeth Lee profiles was done, she's connected to both. So now, somebody has to disconnect her from the wrong Nathaniel, the son. Do you want to do that, or do you want to leave it to the two Elizabeth Lee profile managers to do that?

Spencer-5017 and Spencer-1679 appear to represent the same person because: Jonathan (Spencer-5017) is not likely to be the son of Timothy since Timothy was born in Haddam, CT and died in Vermont. There actually was a Jonathan Spencer (Spencer-1679) born in Haddam on 14 March 1745 but his parents were Nathaniel Spencer (Spencer-1687) and Elizabeth Lee.
