Biography

According to Clark and Jacobus, Mary Spencer, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah Spencer, probably married Jonathan Kneeland.^[1] This Mary Spencer was born 8 mar 1748 in East Haddam, Connecticut.^[1]

Another Mary Spencer was born in East Haddam to Jeremiah and Abigail Spencer on 6 jun 1751.^[2]

However, since one of the Marys had a brother named Amasa, we go here with Clark and Jacobus.

According to Stillman Foster Kneeland, Jonathan kneeland married Mary Spencer, probably about 1768, and they had the following children in East Haddam, Connecticut:^[3]

• Warren 1771
• Asa 1773
• Amasa 1775
• Polly 1777, married Thomas Jones

Research Notes

Mary Spencer Kneeland is said to have died in 1838, but I have found no sources for that yet.

I do find a Mary Spencer born 1751 to Jeremiah and Abigail, ^[4]and there is a rumor (but no source) of a marriage record for Mary Spencer to Solomon Cone in 1776. This could be the same as our Mary, if Jonathan died before 1780 and if Polly was born in 1776. Lots of 'ifs.'
