Humphrey was born in 1638. He was the son of Thomas Spencer and Patience Chadbourne. He passed away in 1700.

Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire 2 HUMPHEREY( 11 ) , carpenter, tay. keeper, Kittery, Great Island, b. 1 1646 (ag. 43 in Apr. 1689), m. 1st Elizabeth Sheares (2), m. 2d one Grace by 25 July 1676 when his parents gave him a house and 30 acres in Kittery (Berwick). Of Gt. Isl. they bot land from the Mussell. est. in Mar. 1677-8. Sold liqour there in 1678, Me. lic. 1680, also in. 1681 with ferry lic. to Gt. Isl. and Str. Bank. Pub. ho. lic. and taxed Gt. Isl. 1682-1690. Jury 1684, 1688; gr.j. (Me.) 1694. Lists 298, 313a, 331b, 52, 92. He d. 19 Dee. 1700.

Wife Grace wit. in contest over est. of T. Harris (26) in 1684; alive 2 Apr. 1686. In Sept. 1687 Wm. Haines told that H. S. and his mo. poisoned his w. who died. As Grace outlived his mo., Haines must have referred to the 1st w. Elizabeth Emery depos. in 1738, ag. ±82, that his 1st w. left two sons:

  • Humphrey, Berwick innkeeper, constable 1696-7,-m. bef. 17 June 1701
  • Mary Cutts(3) who m. 2d Joseph Moulton(6). His will, 22 Jan.-11 July 1712. List 296. Ch William, brot up by mo. 2 yrs. 6 mos.; m. Mary Gerrish (Benj. 3). Sarah, brot up 4 yrs. 6 mos.; m. Thomas Newmarch. Samuel, brot up 6 yrs. 3 mos.; liv. 1737.
  • Thomas, a small boy in Oct. 1685 and apprent. to Thomas Parker( 26) who was accus. of abusing him. He d. a young man (Emery depos.). Stackpole adds
  • Mary, unmarried. One Mary of Berw. d. 19 or 20 Apr. 1704, ' aft. some months' sickness with a disease called Strangury' (List 96).
