Mr. and Mrs. Lyman P Spencer, who for a few years past have been residents of Orange, and formerly lived in Newark and Brooklyn, have been making a southern trip and receiving the felicitations of their friend in celebration of the completion of their fifty years of wedded life.
Mr. Spencer is 73 years old. He is a veteran of the Civil War, and was an officer with the Ohio troops in that service, At one time he had charge of the Passport Bureau in the State Department of Washington. He has since been known as an artist-penman, and in connection with the Spencerian writing publications. He is a son of Platt R Spencer, originator of that system of penmanship. During his youth Lyman P Spencer was a student under James A Garfield, at Hiram College.
Mrs. Spencer has been for many years practically without sight, an affliction she has borne with much courage. She reads the raised print books published for the blind, and is able to correspond with her friends by means of the typewriter, the use of which she has learned since her loss of sight.
From the immediate family circle of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer, consisting of six children and nine grandchildren- now widely scattered- none has ever been removed by death. The children of the couple are Miss May Spencer, of Philadelphia, with whom Mrs. Spencer is now staying; Mrs. H K Carpenter and Mrs. Ruth Warren, of Brooklyn; Mrs. A T Bass, of San Domingo; Platt Spencer, of Racine, Wis.; and Paul E Spencer, of North Yakima, Wash.; Mr. Spencer has living his three brothers and a sister, all of whom are his seniors, the eldest being 81 years old.
