At age 15 he worked in his uncle Samuel Bacon's grocery store Corner Pennsylvania Avenue and seventh Street Washington City for 1 year as a clerk. After that, he was a clerk for the land office at Washington City for several years.
1860 admitted to the bar, Washington City, D.C.
1861 Traveled to Texas and joined the Confederate States Army as a private with Crums Texas Battalion that became part of the 15th Texas Calvery. Promoted to Major in 1862 and served as part of the General and Staff Officers Corps, Division & Brigade Staff under Brigadier General M. D. Ector's "Texas Brigade" until 1865.
