Robert, born in Ireland, emigrated to New York as a young man.[1] In 1761 he married Catherine Sternberg.[2] During the American Revolution, Robert fought with the Butler's Rangers, a Loyalist regiment. In 1785 the Spencers settled on a land grant in Stamford Township, Upper Canada (today's Niagara Falls, Ontario).[3]
