Biography

According to the 1851 Census John was born in 1769. In it he is recorded as being a retired carpenter, married to his wife Elizabeth, also aged 82, born in Arne, Dorset. They were living in Bedchester, Fontmell Magma.

It seems likely that this was his second wife, married in 1823.

And that his first wife was Joanna Lush, married 6th May 1792 in Melbury Abbas and they had lots of children together between 1792 and 1805. Melbury Abbas is a few miles north of Fontmell Magna but there were members of the Lush clan living in Fontmell, so it is easy to see how they might have met.

Joanna died in 1817, so there was plenty of time for John to remarry.

He died in 1852.

Research Notes

No other suitable John Spicer has been found to be the husband of Joanna Lush and the large family they had together.

Arne is in south Dorset, on the edge of the 'Isle' of Purbeck, so a long way from Fontmell Magna. But here is a marriage for a John Spicer in 1823 (25th November) with Betty White in Fontmell Magna. And there was a Betty White born in Arne in 1771.

So although it's not proven it looks likely that John first married Joanna, had a family with her, she died in 1817,and he then married Betty in 1823 as his 2nd wife.

He did have a son John born in 1803, but it appears he married a Maria, which reinforces the likelyhood of the 1823 marriage being for this John.
