Biography

Johanne (Spicer) Darte was born in ~1596 in Heavitree, Devon, England. Her parents were Thomas Spicer (~1550 - <1624) and Elizabeth (Unknown) Spicer (1550 - 1625).

Her siblings were...

  1. John Spicer (1573 - <1581)
  2. Edward Spicer (1575 - <1624)
  3. Nicholas Spicer (1577 - 1623)
  4. William Spicer (1579 - 1625)
  5. John Spicer (1582 - <1624)
  6. Richard Spicer (1585 - <1624)
  7. Agnes (Spicer) Weeks (1587 - >1625)
  8. Peter Spicer (1590 - >1627)
  9. Elizabeth Spicer (1593 - >1625)

Johanne married Richarde Darte (~1586 - 1650) on April 15, 1611 in Kenn, Devon.

Their children were...

  1. Richard Dart (~1612 - 1671)
  2. Marie Dart (1614 - )
  3. Johanne (Dart) Darte (1618 - )
  4. John Darte (1621 - )
  5. Honor Dart (1625 - )
  6. Thomas Darte (1629 - ).

Research Notes

Johanne was most probably the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Spicer and born in Heavitree, where her mother died in 1624/5 (the other childrens baptism can be found, but not this one).

There was some mixing of two Joane Spicer's, one probably born in Heavitree to Elizabeth (and almost certainly Thomas), the other in Powderham to William and Mary in 1592. These two people were cleanly separated in March 2021, and then a duplicate, Spicer-2096 was merged into this record in May 2021.

For reference the other Joan Spicer was born in Powderham to William and Mary Spicer in 1592, and married Richard Hooper at Exminster in 1613.

What is 100% certain is that a Joane Spicer married a Richard Darte in Kenn in 1611 This is supported by the will of her mother Elizabeth, at https://archive.org/stream/historyofdescend00meec/historyofdescend00meec_djvu.txt, which mentions three daughters including Joane Spicer who was married to a Richard Darte. This is the key evidence that separates this Joan Spicer from the one from Powderham who married Richard Hooper (some of this Joan's Heavitree siblings who are mentioned in the will have left plenty of related sources, so ithas been possible to put together a fair bit of the family despite the loss of all Heavitree marriages and burials from this period).

These other family members of the Heavitree Spicer's were on Wikitree as part of Joane Spicer prior to the merge, so are now linked to this record.

Note that Powderham is a lot closer to Kenn than Heavitree (which is the other side of the Exe as well). So there would be a lot of doubt were it not for Elizabeth's will from 1624-5 - the chances of two Joan Spicer's marrying separate Richard Darte's in the same area, and one leaving no marriage record, seems to be about zero.

One other oddity. Elizabeth, the mother, was definitely living in Heavitree but why are there no suitable baptism records for Joane when Anne/Agnes and other children can be found, and the records are clear and easy to read? Was she baptised somewhere else, is a page missing from/ illegible in the register?

Spicer-2096 and Spicer-32 appear to represent the same person because: After further research it seems that we have managed to separate the Joan Spicer who married Richard Darte in 1611 from the Joan Spicer born in Powderham in 1592 (who appears to have married Richard Hooper in 1613). Therefore confident that we can merge the two Joan (Spicer) Darte profiles, so that we are left with only two Jaon Spicers rather than three.

Visitation of Devon 1620 and additions does not support this person being a child of William and Grace.

I have been unable to find any connection between the Exeter Spicer's and this person. John Spicer Dec 2018

The Visitation of Devon and the Spicer's of Devon name different children, and there are other records that back these documents up.

Can anyone provide an original source that connects this Joan as a daughter of William and Grace? John Spicer, December 2018
