Biography

"Gotthard Spielmann of Seelbach was the earliest known ancestor of the family. He was probably born about 1525-30, as he was still in the militia (under 50) at Seelbach in 1572. He was the only Spielmann in the Siegen judicial district 1563-67. In 1563 Seelbach consisted of only four farmsteads, and 'Goedert Spielmann' was the only head of a family who was not a renter, but owned his farm outright. In 1566 he is listed with a wife and one child. He seems to have had two sons, the younger being 'Johann Spielmann the younger of Seelbach,' who moved to Siegen and acquired Siegen citizenship in 1586. The elder son was Johann Spielmann of Seelbach..."[1]

Part of Nassau-Dillenburg became Nassau-Siegen in 1606, after Gotthard Spielmann's death.
