Barney Spilman was born in 1868 and passed away in 1928. His parents were John Jasper Spilman and Laura Ann Moody. His father wanted to ensure that his children were formally educated so Barney went to college and was trained as a lawyer.
Barney Spilman married Emma Lee Gertrude Hooker on November 26, 1891 in Pierce City, Missouri. They had six children:
In 1901, Barney was appointed U.S. Postmaster for Arnett in Arnett, Missouri. The family moved to McDonald County during the appointment and returned to Lawrence County afterward.
By 1920, the family was living on an 80 acre farm which was located on the Sarcoxie Prarle, 5 miles south of the village of Sarcoxie. The farm was a lot of hard work and the children did not like living on the farm. Cirilla and Carlena married at a very young age in order to escape it. However, Emma Lee enjoyed living there and feeding the chickens. She stayed on the farm several years after her husband's passing. The farm was sold to Phillip Everhard on 19 May 1932.
