William Spilman was the son of Thomas Job Spearman Sr and Elizabeth Martin.
Although it was once thought that William was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (DAWSON) SPILMAN, DNA testing has revealed that William was the son of Thomas Job Spearman.
At some point the names of Spearman and Spilman must have been confused and William Spearman became William Spilman. Both the Spearman and Spilman families were prominent in Virginia at the same time. In William's descendant John Jasper Spilman's book, this confusion was reinforced with the assumption that his decendents were related to Henry Spilman who is in the painting of Pocahontas in the Capitol Building in Washington D.C.
Thomas (Job Spearman) SPILMAN died intestate in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., Virginia. In 1740, the inventory of Thomas SPILMAN of Westmoreland Co., Va. was returned into Court by Anne, his relict. His son, William SPELMAN, died in 1760, and left in King George County sons Thomas, William and John, daughters Lettice, Delia and Margaret. [6]
In a deed dated 20 February 1738/9 (recorded 27 Feb. 1738), Robert FRANK and Mary his wife of the Parish of Washington in the County of Westmoreland sold, for six hundred pounds of tobacco, to William SPILLMAN, "a parcel of land which his grandfather Robert FRANK left him by will, being an estimation 160 acres, more or less, relation being thereto had will more fully appear, scituate, lying and being in Washington Parish in the County of Westmoreland, the said land entirely lying on the eastern side of the head of Appomattock Creek, which said land all entirely of the eastern side of the head of said creek, the said Robert FRANK and Mary his wife doth unto the said William SPILLMAN, his heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns doth sell, alien and confirm with all houses, --- etc." Witnesses to the deed were Aaron HARDWICK, George FLETCHER, and Stafford LIGHTBURN. [7]
In a deed dated 27 May 1738, William SPILMAN purchased fifty acres "between the church path and the Meadow Branch" from John PLUNKETT and his wife Frances of Hanover Parish which they bought from John GREENING, "it having been willed him by Robert FRANK." [8]
William SPILMAN (died 1760) of Westmoreland County, Virginia in his will named sons Thomas SPILMAN, William SPILLMAN and John SPILLMAN; and daughters Lettice DULIN and Margaret SPILLMAN. He left 200 acres more or less to his three sons. This land was purchased in 1738 by William SPILMAN, and had previously been in the hands of heirs of Robert FRANK (d.1726 Westmoreland Co., Va.) The will of William SPILMAN was witnessed by Robert FRANK, William PIPER, and Peter JETT, and was entered for probate on 29 April 1760. This William SPILMAN is believed to have married Margaret FRANK. Note that Robert FRANK signed as a witness to the will of William SPILMAN. [9]
The two parcels of land purchased by William SPILMAN in 1738 constitute the 200 acres more or less inherited by William's three sons, Thomas, John, and William, named in his will of 1760.
John SPILMAN of the Parrish of Brunswick, King George County, Virginia deeded his portion of the land in Westmoreland County inherited from his father, William SPILMAN (d.1760), to his brothers Thomas SPILMAN and William SPILMAN of the Parrish of Washington, Westmoreland Co., Va. Seven years later in 1777 a boundary change placed all of this land in King George County. This land consisted of "all that undivided third part of and in all containing two hundred acres situate, lying, and being in the Parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland, the aforesaid land being part of a tract belonging to Robert FRANK and on the north side of the main branch of Mattox Creek and bounded as followeth, beginning at a marked black oak and extending west to the line of William PIPER to marked red oak, thence along the said PIPER line N by W to marked hickorie, thence down the main branch of said creek and then along the said dam to the uppermost line, thence to a black oak, thence East to a live oak in a small branch, finally to the first station, which said tract of land was given and devised to the said John SPILMAN, Thomas SPILMAN, and William SPILMAN party hereto, in and by the last will and testament of the said William SPILMAN the father, deceased, etc." [10] [11]
William SPILMAN, son of William and Margaret (FRANK) SPILMAN, married, ca. 1760, to Frances MASSEY, dau. of Lovell MASSEY who refers to her in his will as "my daughter Frances SPILMAN" and leaves her "my negro man, Will, to use him as her own during her natural life...." William and Frances (MASSEY) SPILMAN had one known child, John SPILMAN (ca.1765-1825). [11]
