The Spitzer lineage has been traced primarily through Roman CatholIc Church records, a few civil records, to the late 1600's. There were two Joannes Spitzers born during that time. Joannes, the son of Nicolas Spitzer was born 10 December 1688 in Rumersheim, Alsace, France; Joannes, the son of George Spitzer was born 29 May 1689 in Wingersheim, Alsace, France. George Spitzer was originally from Rumersheim the same village in which Nicolas resided. One or the other of these Joannes Spitzers married a young girl by the name of Anna Morgenweck, probably in Wingersheim, however, the marriage record could not be found, therefore, making it impossible to determine which Joannes was our direct line ancestor. Marriage records of that period always included the names of the parents of the bride and the groom, but since this information was not forthcoming, the ancestral search had to be abandoned at that point. The Joannes that married Anna Morgenweck was a farmer. He and Anna lived in Wingersheim; their seven children were born there: George, Nicklaus, Anna Maria, Joannes, Catherina, Joseph and Francis Antony.
