John Heffren Sprague was born, probably at Sprague's Falls (Baileyville), Maine, c1805, the son of Eli Sprague and Jane Livermore Thornton; married c1829, his cousin Rachael Sprague. He was called "Hellish John" to distinguish him from his cousin and brother-in-law, "Heavenly John", brother to Rachael.
