Biography

Ethel Sprague was the oldest daughter of Governor William Sprague IV of Rhode Island and his first wife, Catherine Jane "Kate" Chase, oldest surviving daughter of Salmon Portland Chase.

Ethel had a career on the stage in the 1890s and travelled west, which is probably how she met Dr. Frank Donaldson. They married quietly in 1896. They had one son, Chase Donaldson, born in 1897.

She filed for a Civil War widow's pension 31 July 1906. Dr Donaldson died in April 1906 right before his fiftieth Birthday.

The 1910 US Federal Census indicates that Ethel Donaldson was widowed (and resident in a mental health facility in the District of Columbia when the Census was conducted.)

Ethel died in 1936 in New York. She was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.
