Biography

Charles " Karell" was born in Sweden in 1658 and educated in London. On his way home from his duties in the Swedish Legation one evening in 1678, he was kidnapped and shipped to Virginia to serve five years as an indentured servant. Springer learned of the Swedish colony on the Christina. After gaining his freedom, he walked 400 miles to live among them.[1]

In absence of clergy and as the most literate among the congregation, he read the Psalms, published sermons and prayers. He petitioned the King of Sweden for priests and books, which were finally provided in 1697. He served as the Warden, Vestryman, and Councilor from the church's founding until his death in 1738.[1]

A Letter to his mother and signature theories

A letter to his mother, dated June 1, 1693, from "Pennsellvania on the Delaware River".

"When I was in London, and was of a mind to journey home to Sweden. . . having learned the English speech and writing and reading. . . . . I was kidnapped and against my will taken on board an English ship, carried to Virginia, and sold off like a farm animal . . . . and held in very slavery for five years together."

He signed this letter, "Karell Christophersson Springer", and this may have given rise to the mistaken use of Christoper as a middle name for him, which seem to be wholly unjustified. In all the many papers he signed for the church, and all personal legal papers, he signed himself Charles or Carl Springer, never using "Christopher".

"My work was unspeakable. In the summer it was extra ordinary hot during the day, and my work was mostly in the winter, clearing land and cutting down the forest and making it ready for planting Tobacco and Indian grain (corn) in the summer. I had a very hard master. But now - to God be praise, honor, and glory! - I have overcome it all."

"When I had faithfully served out my time I heard, accidentally, that there were Swedes at Delaware River, in Pennsellvania . . . . and . . . . I made that difficult journey of about four hundred miles. And when I got there I beheld the Old Swedes, and they received me very kindly."

I am new to wiki tree. I have an Ancestry.com tree that I am working on that has proven documentation back to Karl Christospherson Springer. I am working from a hand written family tree that I am trying to prove connection with the Springer clan. I am willing to share information on anyone in family my except for names of relatives still living.

Karl Springer 1658 Jacob Springer Humphrey Springer 1709 wife Comfort Dyer Son Phillip Springer b1734 daughter Barabara Springer 1779 husband Ludwick Shearer Son Ludwick Sherarer daughter Elizabeth Shearer 1817 If anyone has matching information I will gladly share mine.

Upon trying to connect the dots, Dodson / Crowell / Springer dna matches in the USA, I was amazed to find a link, correct by the size of the cms match: (via my Ekman ancestor in Varmland / Sweden)

Charles Christopherson (Carl, Karell)(Christopher) Springer Nov 6 1658 May 26 1738 He carried our dna, and is related via my direct Ancestor: Olaus Jonae Jonæ Ekman Direct ancestor (8 generations) 1639 Jan 23 1713 The above direct Ancestor’s grandson is Anders Stockenstrom: Anders Andersen Stockenstrom Direct ancestor (6 generations) July 1707 Apr 8 1764 who married : Catharina Margareta Stockenstrom (born Ekman) Direct ancestor (6 generations) Feb 8 1723 1773 Filipstad, Filipstad, Varmland County, Sweden I have connected / emailed a few new cousins from this link, these being in the USA Gedmatch# PC2730307 USA based persons that are perhaps related to Dodson / Crowell / Springer / Ekman may want to check the above.

Note: the Swedish family connection / tree is firmly grounded as per the accuracy of the Swedish Records.

I also have many (perhaps thousands) of other maternal / Welsh / English dna matches via my Davies / Mason / Seale / Overton / Harris / Lewis / Jenkins ancestors, many of which emigrated to the colonies / USA, some early in the 1600, and others more recently. (My mother, Milbrough Joyce Seale was named after her g grandmother Milborough Seale: Milborough Seale (born Mason) Great-great-grandmother 1839 Aug 2 1909

1839 Birth Yarpole, Herefordshire 1839

I'm new to wikitree, but have a detailed tree on myheritage, built from 40+ years of research. I appreciate the potential of wikitree, and have lots of work to do :)

I have built up many hundreds of dna match links, into my tree, and if these are connected to wikitree (in the future), I believe it will assist many genealogists / ordinary wikitree' ers, in time.

I like making a note of my ancestors arrival to the colonies. I have found an immigration record for 1693 that I thought someone might like to add to his profile:

Delaware Bay or River; Year: 1693; Page Number: 8 .... also: Ancestry.com. U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s

Carl Springer came to America in 1678. He was kidnapped in London. He had been sent to there to learn English. He was forced to work a 5 year indenture in Virginia until about 1683 when he gained his freedom and went to Delaware. By 1693 he was established in Delaware and using his education to help the Swedish community there resolve issues they faced due to being under English rule. There were letters and a census dated 1693 in which Carl Springer requested help in the form of books and ministers from the Swedish Crown. That assistance was provided in 1697.

Karl Springer apparently had a brother who also emigrated to the colonies (New Jersey or etc.). He was likely the ancestor of the Springers now seen in New York. But I'm just speculating. Yeah, I saw a shorter version of his trials and tribulations as an indentured servant at Ancestry. But I wasn't certain it actually referred to him. I thought it could have been his brother, assuming he had a brother in the N.A. colonies.
