William was born about 1760 in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
He married Sarah Webber on 2 May 1779 in Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts.
William appears to have been a mariner by trade commanding a schooner "Hornet" with a crew of 30 men. He was commissioned to deliver cargo on 15 Sep 1778 for the Continental Army. Cargo consisting of 8 carriage guns, 20 lbs of beef and pork, 1000 wt of bread, 400 wt of powder, and shot in proportion.
William also served in the Volunteer Regiment under the command of Daniel Sullivan from 28 Jul 1779 to 28 Sep 1779 on an expedition against Major Bragaduce.
He died about 1850 in Giles, Tennessee. [See research note below]
According to the 1850 census for Giles County, Tennessee, William Springer was born in South Carolina, so I don't believe that the William Springer who died in Giles, Tennessee is the same William Springer who is presented in this profile. [1]
I thought William Springer, ship captain, that died 1816 in Hallowell, ME at age 60 was a possibility, but upon finding his biography, I think not. (I hope I'm doing this right. I'm only putting these notes in here so other people don't waste time looking in the same places.)[2]
