Biography

Aug. 22, 1921 — Dec. 10, 2011 Kathryn Louise “Kay” Fletcher, 90, of Athens, Ohio, died Dec. 10 in Athens. She was born in Mallard, Iowa, to Oscar C. Sprout and Ethel (Wening) Sprout. She graduated from high school in 1939, attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and taught one year in Chaplin, Iowa. The family moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she worked as a credit assistant at Walker Department Store, and later a teacher at Long Beach Day Care Center. She married Charles (Bob) Fletcher on Nov. 14, 1943, in Long Beach. After his release from the service in 1945, they lived in Milwaukee, Wis., and Seattle, Wash., before moving to Corvallis in 1951. She was the Christian education and preschool director of First Presbyterian Church from 1962 to 1980. She was a volunteer at the ARC Resale Corner and Family Assistance at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was a member and a deacon of Calvin Presbyterian Church, and a lunch buddy at Garfield School. She had a wonderful gift of hospitality, and ministered to many. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her sons, Chuck Fletcher and wife, Julie, of Gresham, Bradley Fletcher and wife, Carol, of Beulah, Colo., and Donald Fletcher and wife, Vicki, of Aloha; daughters, Karen Vest and husband, Robert, of Alma, Ark., and Sherrie Alarid and husband, Steve, of Athens; 25 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Bob) Fletcher. A memorial service will take place on a date to be announced at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Corvallis.
