Biography

Jonathan Spurgeon was born in 1787 in Doddridge, Virginia to James and Elizabeth (Farmer) Spurgeon. He married Ruth Jeffreys about 1808 in Doddridge, Virginia. They were the parents of an unnamed son (born 1806), James (1808-1878), Elizabeth (1810-1894), John William (1813-1908), an unnamed infant (born and died in 1814), He married Elizabeth Catherine Schmell on September 25, 1816 in Monongalia, Virginia. They were the parents of Charles (born 1817), Philip (1818-1872), Jesse (1819-1889), Mary Ann (1822-1916), George W. (1823-1884), Elizabeth (born 1824), Jeremiah (1825-1853), Catharine (1826-1911), and Rachel (born 1830). Jonathan died in 1853 at the age of about 66 in Cove Creek, West Virginia, and was buried in Boyce Cemetery in Doddridge, West Virginia.
