Soldier's declaration: filed 4 May 1907, William J. Spurlock age 82, resident of Boone Co AR, 5'11", dark complexion, black eyes, blck hair, a farmer, born in Tennessee in 1825 at Columbia. Has lived in Missouri until abt 1868 and Arkansas ever since. Signed by x-mark. Witness: Walter Harris. First applied 14 July 1890, then age 65 a resident of Jasper, Newton Co. Ar. His residence caught fire and burned all of his household goods and papers.
1850 Census William Spurlock, wife Sarah and daughter Nancy (Elizabeth) were living in Independence Township of Dunklin County, Missouri, and listed occupation as farmer.[1]

1870 Census has the family living in Harrison Township of Boone County Arkansas. 5 children at home Elizabeth (Nancy?) Pollina, Josephine, WW, and Laura E. (Mary was not listed??) William listed real estate value at $1600 and personal estate as $1900. Also listed with family were two farm hands. Garrett Belles age 17 and Thomas Chambers age 26. Belles was born in Arkansas and Chambers in Georgia.[3]

1880 Census has family living in the Crooked Creek Township in Boone County Arkansas. Census taken 15 june 1880. William's mother and father are listed as being born in Georgia. Sarah was born in Tennessee and her parents in North Carolina. Mary Minerva was born in Illinois and WW and Laura were born in Missouri and G.B in Arkansas.. From that information will make the assumption family had been in Arkansas since at least 1871. Listed in the same household was JE Wadkins, age 25 and his wife Josephine age 19 and daughter of William & Sarah. Listed with the family was John Hancock age 20 as farm hand.[4]
