Biography

Robert was born in 1700. He passed away about 1768 or 1770.

Robert Sr. was deeded 250 acres in 1733, Goochland Co., VA; he served in the French and Indian Wars (1758), and was the Burgess from Halifax Co., VA, wife Elizabeth. He had a brother, George Wade. His Last Will and Testament dated 5/1/1767, proved 1770 Halifax Co., VA, names his wife, Elizabeth, sons (Robert, John, Stephen, Charles, Edward, and Hampton), daughters (Mary Hunt, Sarah Stokes) Anna, wife of deceased son, Robert, grandson Robert, son of Stephen.^[1][2][3] Halifax, Virginia, Will book 0, pages 218-222, WILL OF *ROBERT WADE "..sick of body.."^[4]

• I lend to my wife Elizabeth my tract of land whereon I live together with my tract of land & mill on Difficult Creek.
• Also I lend to her my wife as much of my personal estate as she shall think proper to take during life or widowhood & then disposed of as hereafter mentioned.
• My wife to have disposal of increase of Sarah while in her possession & the slaves she shall make choice of to be sold as soon as convenient after her death or marriage to the highest bidder of my sons and daughters & the rest of my personal estate that she shall make choice of to be sold & money after paying my cash legacees if any remains to be equally divided amongst my sons and daughters, & the sons & daughters of Robert Wade, Jun., deceased to have same share equally divided amongst them. Were any other my children to dy before such division their parts divided amongst their sons & daughters. If wife make choice of any slaves I shal bequeath to any of my children or grandchildren in this will that they amedialely at expiration of her natural life or widowhood decend to such of my children or grandchildren as they are given & to their heirs forever.
• To my son John Wade twenty Shillings to buy him a ring. I have given him the estate I intended already.
• To son Stephen Wade one negro man Joe. I have given him part of my estate already. I lend to son Stephen & Susana his wife a negro Sarah during their lives & then the sd Sarah to my grandson Robert Wade son of Stephen Wade & Susanna his wife.
• I lend to daughter-in-law Ann Wade, widow of Robert Wade, deceased during her widowhood or till her son Hampton Wade comes to lawful age of 21 years to demand him one negro man Jack.
• To son Charles Wade one negro man Sam. I also lend to him during his life one negro boy Davie & at his decease to Robert Wade son of sd Charles Wade. If Robert son of Charles die then his father Charles Wade may dispose of sd boy Davie.
• To daughter Mary Hunt 50 Pounds current money I have given her a negro woman Nan already.
• To daughter Sarah Stokes 50 Pounds I having given her one negro woman Tamer, one boy Jammey & one boy Robin already.

To son Edward Wade my mill & all my land on n.s. of Difficult Creek.

• Also to son Edward Wade that part lying on s.s. of sd Difficult Creek beginning at mouth of branch that crosses the path leading from my house to my sd mill, etc. Also one negro man Dick & woman Molley. I having made him a deed of gift of negro girl Anna. All of which I give him with this restriction that if he die without lawful begotten son or daughter that the estate to him given shall be sold & money be equally divided among my sons & daughters & their heirs. I also give to him the sd Edward 30 hd of hogs for the rebuilding the mill which is to be done with white oak plank & fraiming. Also all my stock of all kind running at the mill.
• To grandson Benjamin Walker 4 Pounds for his schooling.
• To grandson Robert Wade son of Hampton Wade & Jean his wife one negro boy Servella (sic).My four negroes Peter, Robin, Venus & Janey may each have the chusing their master or mistress among my children having them at price appraised.
• To grandson Robert Wade son of Robert Wade deceased my tract of land whereon now I live on Staunton River together with land purchased of Matthew Marrable on n.s. of Difficult Creek to joine tract given to Edward Wade on s. or lower side agreeable to bounds mentioned above. The dwelling to be finished & paid for out of my estate.
• My well beloved wife to have possession of lands & plantation during life or widowhood & all she shall make or raise to be at her disposal.
• Son Edward Wade to have possession of sd plantation & land on his giving Bond & Security to m

He left the following: Son John Wade, 20 shillings to buy a ring, Son Stephen Wade, life estate in one slave, to revert to Robert Wade, Jr., son of Susanna and Stephen Wade. Daughter in law Ann, widow of Robert Wade, Jr., life estate in one slave to revert to her son Hampton Wade, son Charles Wade, life estate in one slave to revert to his son Robert Wade, Jr., daughter Mary Hunt, fifty pounds current money and the slave she already has in her possession.Daughter Sarah Stokes, fifty pounds and three slaves, son Richard Wade,land on the north side of Difficult Creek, my mill, livestock and slaves. Grandson Robert Wade, son of Hampton and wife Jean, one slave, grandson Robert Wade son of Robert Wade, Jr, dec'd; land on Stayton River, house,money for six years schoolin, slaves, Nephew Stephen Jones, five pounds current money or horse or equal value. Executors: Sons in Law Memucam Hunt and William Stokes and son Edward Wade. Robert died between May 1, 1767 and April 19, 1770 in Anheim Parish, Halifax County, Virginia Colony .4,1
