Biography

Birth and Parentage

Margaret St. John was born in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire around 1524, the third daughter of Sir John St John (great-grandson of Margaret Beauchamp of Bletsoe) and Margaret Waldegrave, [1]

Marriage

Her first husband was William Gostwick son of Sir John Gostwick of Willington, Bedfordshire, and after his death in 1545 after a childless marriage, she married Francis Russell, Earl of Bedford, and they had four sons and three daughters [2][3]

Issue

  1. Anne Russell (1548–1603), married Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick[1]
  2. Edward Russell, Baron Russell (1551–1572), married Jane Sybilla Morrison of Cashiobury, without issue[1]
  3. John Russell, Baron Russell (c.1553–1584), married Elizabeth Cooke, daughter of Sir Anthony Cooke and Anne FitzWilliam. They had one son, Francis (died young), and two daughters, who included Hon. Anne, Countess of Worcester, wife of the 1st Marquess of Worcester.[1][1]
  4. Francis Russell, Baron Russell (c.1554 – 27 July 1585), MP for Northumberland 1572-84; mortally wounded in a fray on the Scottish border, dying hours before his father.[2] Married Juliana Foster and had issue, including Edward Russell, 3rd Earl of Bedford, and Mary Ann Russell, wife of John Roote, and had issue[1]
  5. William Russell, 1st Baron Russell of Thornhaugh (c.1557–1613)[1]
  6. Elizabeth Russell (d. 1605), married William Bourchier, 3rd Earl of Bath[1]
  7. Margaret Russell (1560–1616), married George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland.[1]

Death

27 August, 1562. [1] Woodbourne, (Woburn?) Bedfordshire, England

Burial

28 Aug 1562 at Woburn, Bedfordshire " The Lady Margaret Countes of Bedd"[4]

20 SEP 1562 Chenies, Buckinghamshire, England

Research Notes

The Gostwick pedigree in the same Visitation says that Margaret was the daughter of Oliver, Lord St John. Sir John St John is correct.

I can find no trace of a daughter Dorthy. She was falsely attributed to them.

Notes burial: 10 September 1562; Chenies, Buckinghamshire, England

There are 9 children showing rather than 7 in the bio.

Francis is duplicated in the children Janet appears in the children. She shouldn't be here. That reduces the children to 7.

Saint John-147 and St John-421 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly a duplicate, although I can find no trace of a daughter Dorthy.
