James Ernest Stafford was born in Staveley or Barrow Hill, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire on the 29th March 1878[1], and baptised in Brimington, Derbyshire on the 28th April 1878 (father James, mother Mary Jane)[2]; he emigrated to Canada in 1906[3][4], living in London, Ontario as a lodger at the residence of his future wife.
On 3rd January 1918 he was drafted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force[1], although it is not clear whether he was sent to Europe - his draft papers claim he was 5 years younger than his birth record (what was the age limit on the Canadian forces at the time, did he lie to make himself eligible, as he would have been approaching 40?), and the second page of his military record is not present on the website in the above source. He married Mary Elizabeth (Pickering) Bowyer in London, Middlesex, Ontario on 6th September 1921[5]. He was still living in London, Ontario in 1945 where he appears on the electoral register as retired[6].
