Biography

ALTERNATE DEATH: May 1812

Drowned while crossing Yadkin River in small boat seven miles east of Wilkesboro

The Staleys came to the Guilford-Rowan Co. area of N.C. about 1760's. They lived in the counties of Randolph, Chatham, Rowan and Guilford. There is a town or village, Staley, N.C., on the edge of the Randolph Co. line next to Chatham Co., N.C.

The first land deed, Wilkes Co. deed, book C1, says Jacob Staley of Chatham Co. this 1801.

Military service. Rowan Co. court Sept 22, 1763, quote: Joseph Staley native of Germany naturalized by the court.[1]

Jesse Hull, ancestor of Sec. of State Cordell Hull, married Rebecca Staley lived in Wilkes Co., but moved to Tenn. [2]

This record was written by R.L. Staley who died several years ago. It is glued on the inside cover of a [3] It was found in an antique shop.

In 1760 A.D., Adam Staley who was born in 1740 came from Pennsylvania and settled in Guilford Co., N.C. At the age of 84 years he was drowned in the Yadkin River (when attempting to cross in a small boat) in Wilkes County, N.C. at a point known as the Little Rock about seven miles east of Wilkesboro.[4] His son, Jacob Staley, was born in Guilford Co., N.C., 1785 and died at the age of 80 years at his home one mile south of Delaplane, Wilkes County, N.C., And his son Jackson Staley was born 1847 (1817) at the same home of his father's death and died at the same place at the age of 50 years.

His son J.M. Staley was born at the same home 1859 or about that. R.L. Staley born 1883.[5]

Note on his death:

Born in 1740 died age 84 = 1824.
