Biography

Puritan Great Migration
Rebecca (Phillips) Lord immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for England

Rebecca Phillips was baptized St. Peter's, Great Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, 13 May 1632.[1][2][3] She was the daughter of William Phillips and his first wife, Mary Bishop.

Rebecca immigrated to New England with her parents; the family was settled at Charlestown, Massachusetts by 1639.[4]

Rebecca married by 1650, Robert Lord. He was baptized Towcester, Northamptonshire, England, 12 May 1621,[5][6] the son of Thomas and Dorothy (Bird) Lord. Robert immigrated 1635 aboard the Elizabeth & Ann.[7]

By 1656, Robert and Rebecca (Phillips) Lord had returned to England, and were living in Stepney.[8]

Children

The children of Robert and Rebecca Lord were:

  • Robert Lord, born Boston April 1651, probably died young.[9][10]
  • Thomas Lord, born Boston 18 May 1653,[11] died at Boston, 6 Oct 1653.[12]
  • Rebecca Lord, baptized at Stepney 20 Feb 1657.[13][14]
  • Robert Lord, baptized at Stepney 6 Apr 1657.[15][16]
Note: Rebecca's and Robert's birth dates are incompatible. They appear on the same registry image, which was probably transcribed from earlier records, and most likely Robert was born in 1658.
  • Sarah Lord, baptized at Stepney 28 August 1659.[17]
  • William Lord, baptized at Stepney 11 Aug 1661.[18][19]
  • a son, died in infancy, buried 14 Oct 1668 at St. Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney[20]
  • Mary Lord, no birth or baptism record found. See profile of Mary (Lord) Warne for analysis of her most likely year of birth, 1670.
  • a daughter, died in infancy, buried 18 Mar 1672 at St. Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney[21]

Research Notes

Disputed & Corrected Parents: Rebecca's profile has been updated to report her parents as William Phillips and his first wife, Mary Bishop. Rebecca was not the daughter of Christopher Stanley; she was not the daughter of Susanna (_____) (Stanley) Phillips.

Oh, Susanna! William Phillips and his second wife, Susanna Phillips, both wrote wills dated 10 September 1650.[22] In her will,[23] probated 2 August 1655, Susanna refers to "dau-in Law, Mary field," "dau. Martha Thurston," dau. "Rebecca Lord," "sonne Wm Phillips," "sonne Nathl Phillips," "Elizabeth Phillips, my dau." "dau. Phebe Phillips," and "dau. Sarah."

Savage (1862)[24] reported William Phillips second marriage to Susanna, saying "by her ... [he] had ... prob. William, Eliz. and Sarah," further calling Mary Fields likely a daughter "of Stanley by a former" wife.

Pope (1900)[25] treated William Phillips' daughters Rebecca and Martha as the children of Christoper and Susannah Stanley. This claim was republished with some vigor by George Warne Labaw in 1911,[26] and has become widely circulated.[27]

Applying logic and reasoning to the available evidence, in 1938, the authors of Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire[28] corrected the record, with the possible exception of daughter Sarah "who otherwise may have been [second wife's child]." About this specific passage, Hal Bradley (2012; pub. 2013) writes that Sarah's "parentage remains ambiguous."

In 2013, Hal Bradley's article updating the family of William Phillips was published in The American Genealogist. Bradley's article lays out the English record for William's marriage to Mary Bishop, as well as the English baptismal records for their children born there. Using these and other records, Bradley was able to substantiate the findings earlier published in the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire and add more details to the early family.

Robert Charles Anderson described the marriage and baptismal, etc. records published by Bradley in 2013 as "the complete and accurate distribution of the children of William Phillips among his three wives.[29]

The profile of Mary Lord-2063 is ready for consideration for reconnection to PGM parents Robert Lord-70 and Rebecca Phillips-38611 Lord. Extensive research shows that she was their daughter (see her Research Notes). Mary is not PGM.

Four new profiles of non-PGM children, with solid baptism records linking them to Robert and Rebecca, are also ready for connection: Lord-7163, Lord-7165, Lord-7153, and Lord-7166.

Done. Thanks very much Ray, for all your research on this family.

Having previously disproven an often-cited birth record for daughter Mary Lord (Cambridge MA 13 Jul 1668), I recommended that Mary be disconnected from Robert and Rebecca Lord, and she was made an orphan on WikiTree. Recent research in English records has now developed strong, although circumstantial, evidence that Mary was indeed their daughter. I am starting the process of restoring Mary to the Lord family and will begin by adding baptism records of her siblings and other information that provides circumstantial evidence for her membership in the family of Robert and Rebecca Lord.

I have made corrections to this profile in preparation for restoring the connections of Mary Lord-2063 to Robert and Rebecca Lord as described in the message above. PGM managers can review and link the profiles.

I also created a preliminary profile for Rebecca’s daughter Sarah Lord-7153, who should also now be linked (Sarah is not PGM, as she emigrated from England to New York in about 1684).

Following recent research done by GeneJ X and me, I recommend detaching Mary Lord-2063 as a child from this profile. See Mary's Disputed Origins section for extensive evidence.

Rebecca's profile is PPP, might PGM sever association with linked daughter Mary (Lord) Warne. Disputed associations sections on the various profiles have been updated to support this change.

Profile has been updated to support:

(1) Change LNAB to Phillips. (2) Change from PGM to PGM Beyond. (Robert Lord also needs this change.)

There is a child linked, Mary, who is not reported in the 2012 (pub, 2013) article by Bradley.

It looks like her LNAB should be changed to Phillips.

Edited: And also some work needs to be done to her bio, if she wasn't Stanley's child; perhaps her immigration information is incorrect as well. I'll add a maintenance category to her profile

Her mother was recently changed, but her mother was not a spouse of Christopher Stanley, it looks like. Something seems wrong.

Christopher's widow, Susannah, married second to Mary {Bishop) Phillips' widower, William Phillips.

I suspect in error, Mary Bishop was added as another wife to Christopher. I have severed that marriage.

I have changed Rebecca's father to William Phillips.
