Obituary as submitted to funeral home: Dorothy Jean Stanley Moore died September 17, 2002 in Topeka, KS. She was born March 3, 1928 to Ernest Ray and Sara Evans (Turrentine) Stanley. Captivated by flying, she earned her pilot’s license in 1946 and was awarded the Women’s Aeronautic Association scholarship in 1949. Dorothy worked as a meteorologist, mother, as a camp director for the Camp Fire Girls, and for the Social Security Administration. Dorothy was co-founder of the Kansas Trails Council, and active in the Johnson County Outdoor Society and the Swinging Single Square Dance Club. At age 65, she celebrated her retirement by backpacking alone in Alaska for a month. She was married for more than 25 years to Edwin R. Moore of Ft. Collins, CO. She is survived by their five children: Joyce and husband Harold Roy Hodges of Bonner Springs, KS, Stanley and Karen (Woods) of Lake Jackson, TX., Allen R. and Paula (Montgomery) of Joplin, MO., Glen Stuart of Linn Valley, KS. and Sandra Jean Moore of Topeka; her sister: Mildred “Millie” Ruth Stanley Ransom of Denver, CO; 11 grandchildren: Jerri Hodges Barr, Jay Hodges, Jeana, JoAnna, William, Bethany, Jonathan, Abby, Lucas, Timothy and Patience Moore, and 5 great-grandchildren. Graveside services September 21st with burial in Garden of Faith, Mt. Hope Cemetery. Donations suggested to Appalachian Trail Conference, PO Box 807, Harper’s Ferry, WV.25425, or Charitable Care Endowment, United Methodist Homes, Inc., 7220 SW Asbury Drive, Topeka, KS 66614-6059.
