Edward Stanley was born in Lancashire, England.

Edward Stanley was christened on 27 Oct 1822 at St Mary the Virgin Church in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of James Stanley and Elizabeth (Parker) Stanley. His father's occupation was given as blacksmith, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, Edward was living with his parents in Lane Ends, Eccleston. Edward was an apprentice tool maker, his father was a blacksmith.

Edward married Elizabeth Dutton on 13 Jan 1845 at St Helens Parish Church. Edward was above age (21 or more) and a toolmaker, and was living in Prescot; Elizabeth was 19. Neither had been married before. Their fathers were James Stanley and Daniel Dutton. The witnesses were William Dutton and Elizabeth Leyland.
