Mrs. Margaret Maria Colgan, for 31 years a resident of Valley township and a resident of Wyoming for the past 32 years, passed away at her home on North Madison avenue Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Colgan's last illness dated back to Nov. 1, 1936, and since Nov. 5 she had been confined to her bed. For several weeks her condition had been serious, and death was attributed to the infirmities of old age.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Dominic's church and were attended by a large crowd of relatives and friends. The rites were in the charge of the Rev. Fr. J. M. Fitzgerald, and interment was in St. Dominic's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lawrence O'Brien, Eugene Day, Nelson Shane, Raymond O'Neill, Leonard Shane, and Earl Day.
Margaret Maria Stanley was born in Richwoods township, Peoria county, on March 21, 1854, and had she lived until her next birthday anniversary she would have been 83 years of age. She was a daughter of John and Bridget Stanley and was one of a family of nine children, four of whom died in infancy. One sister, Mrs. Clara Westefer, died in May, 1935, and another sister, Mrs. Agnes Stickle, passed away at Knoxville, Iowa, Mary 16, 1936. Once sister, Mrs. W. C. Kreiling, and one brother, E. J. Stanely, both of Peoria, are survivors of her parents' family.
On January 16, 1873, she was united in marriage to Patrick Colgan, in St. Mary's church, Peoria, and they began housekeeping in Valley township. They remained there for 31 years, and it was there that their 11 children were born. Five children died in infancy, and the surviving six children are as follow: Mrs. Sarah O'Brien of Camp Grove, Mrs. James P. Colgan of Speer, Mrs. James T. O'Neill of Wyoming, Mrs. Fred Schaffer of Stark, Mrs. John E. Day of Wyoming, and Mrs. Joseph Shane of Speer. Other survivors include 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
On October 9, 1904 the family moved to Wyoming, taking up their abode in the home on North Madison avenue, and it was there on May 9 1917, that Mr. Colgan passed away. Mrs. Colgan was a member of St. Dominic's church and the Ladies' Altar and Rosary society, and she live a truly Christian life. Possessed of [piece missing] charms, she was a lovely lady and took great pride in being [missing] She enjoyed [missing]."
