Corporal Joshua Staples served with 9th Massachusetts Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Joshua was born in 1755. He is the son of Samuel Staples and Mercy Cane. [1]

James Wesson's (9th) [MA] regt.; residence, Deer Island; credited to town of Newburyport; also, Corporal, same co. and regt.; Continental Army pay accounts for service from Jan. 1, 1780, to Dec. 31, 1780; residence, Phillipstown; also, Private, same co. and regt.; return for clothing for the year 1780; also, descriptive list made up from Jan. 1, 1780, to Dec. 31, 1780; Capt. Samuel Carr's co., Col. Michael Jackson's (8th) regt.; rank, Corporal; age, 25 yrs.; stature, 5 ft. 7 in.; complexion, dark; hair, dark; occupation, husbandman; birthplace, Phillipstown; residence, Deer Island; enlisted Dec. 16, 1779, by Capt. Carr, at West Point; enlistment, during war; also, discharge dated June 13, 1783, signed by Gen. Washington, granting said Staples, a Corporal in Col. Jackson's regt., an honorable discharge from the service, he having served 6 yrs. 2 mos.; discharge also states that said Staples had been honored with the badge of merit for 6 years faithful service. Noted: It seems he died about 1806 at Deer Isle Maine . Thanks to Gwen May for this info. I had his death as 1845 at Swan's Island, using his Maine Military Record from Soldiers Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War Maine [see above].

His third wife filed probate, Hancock Co. Maine, 15 May 1806. See 1806; Probate Record; Maine, below.
