Biography

"According to [daughter] Harriet's application to the Dawes' Final Rolls, Morning's maiden name was Williams. Her parents were John Williams birthplace unknown and Lucy (no maiden name) who was born at Greasy Rock, TN. Morning had siblings Lane and Elizabeth."[1] Lane died in Texas and Elizabeth died in Ada, Oklahoma.[2]

Note: Sneedville was originally known as "Greasy Rock." When Hancock County was formed from parts of Hawkins and Claiborne counties in the 1840s, Greasy Rock was chosen as the county seat. The town was renamed in honor of William Henry Sneed (1812–1869), an attorney from Knoxville who helped defend the new county when several residents sued in an attempt to block its creation.[3]

"Application card on Harriett Pitts (Harriett Catherine Walden) sister of Susie Walden. Her application for enrollment was rejected. Listed Harriett's parents as Elexander (Alexander) WALDEN and Morning WILLIAMS WALDEN. She claimed Morning was a Cherokee Indian and Morning's parents were John and Lucy WILLIAMS all born in Greasy Rock in East Tennessee. In 1851, they were living in Keetsville Missouri. She listed her siblings as:

Margaret Walden born 8/14/1857 died 12/1884
Elizabeth Walden born 12/15/1847 living
Susan Walden born 1/30/1850 [Harriet said Susan was dead at the time of the application in 1906 but Harriet couldn't remember when Susan died.]
Freeman Walden born 9/10/1852 died 10/1861
John Walden born 7/17/1855 died 2/2/1877.[4]

Harriett Walden Pitts was born 3/23/1846 in Greasy Rock East Tennessee. She listed her children at the time of the application as:

Joseph Walden 38 born 1869
Hester Misenhammer 35 born 1866.[5]

The 1850 census of Cass Co., MO spells her name 'Mourning' rather than Morning.

Morning was said to be Native American, possibly Cherokee or Choctaw. She was also said to be part black Dutch.
