Alan George Starkey was born 1 July 1901 at Waterloo, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia [1] and was baptised by on 10 January 1908 when aged 6 years old, in the Holy Trinity Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia [2], the son of William Alexander George Starkey and Theodosia Isabel (Dosie) Duffell and was the brother of Grace Ellen (Starkey) O'Neall, Ida Mary Starkey, William Abner Starkey, James Alexander Starkey, Roland J Starkey, Alma Isabel (Starkey) Morton, Doris Starkey, Gladys May (Starkey) Dyer and Marjorie Eileen (Starkey) Lawler.
He married Lilian Gladys May Joyce on 5 August 1924 in Manly, New South Wales, Australia [3]. They had at least one daughter.

Sergeant Alan George Starkey, Service Number NX59082, enlisted to serve in World War Two on 12 July 1940 at the Paddington Recruiting Centre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was serving as part of the 1st Independent Company Kavieng when he was captured. He was killed when the ship he was aboard was torpedoed while being transferred to a Prisoner of War camp in Japan [4][5].
Alan died before dawn 1 July 1942, off Luzon in Northern Philippines in South China Sea, on his 41st birthday, when the Japanese Prison Ship "SS Montevideo Maru" was torpedoed and sunk by a United States submarine while en route to Japan to be interred in a prison camp. His remains were never found
