Biography

Birth

Ida Blanche Starkey was born in September 1861 in Illinois, United States to Jonathan Starkey (1825-1876) and Sarah A. Bellamy (1839-1920). Find A Grave and headstone say Sharkey, but her family records clearly say Starkey.^[1]

Ida lived in Illinois all of her life until after her husband died.

Her mother, Sarah Starkey, widow, was the head of household in 1880 and there were siblings. William 19 was a bookkeeper in a drug store, Charles 17 did day labor, John 12, did labor, and Ida was 9.

Marriage and Family

She married James Madison Munsel (1861-1902) on 16 April 1889 in Hamilton County, Illinois.

The family lived in McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois where her husband was a grain dealer and they owned their own home.

Children of the Munsel-Starkey Marriage

1. Pauline Naomi Munsel (1894-1894).
2. Ruth Munsel (1896-1980).

Her husband died when they were both 41. She then moved to San Diego, San Diego, Californa. She lived at 2632 H Street in 1905 which is located in downtown San Diego. She is listed as his widow. Ida was not employed at that time. In fact, she doesn't seem to ever have obtained a social security card.

In 1910 she was 39 and with her daughter Ruth 14. Ida's mother Sarah also lived with them in Redlands, San Bernardino, California. No employment for anyone was listed. They rented at 105 Sonora Street with the Crosby family.

By 1920 Ida and Ruth were back in San Diego on 21st Street. They rented what may have been just rooms. She was 49 and Ruth was 23. Ida was unemployed and Ruth was a grade school teacher.

Death and Burial

Ida died on 19 December 1933 at the age of 72 in San Diego County, California, United States. She was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, McLeansboro, Hamilton, Illinois with her husband and baby daughter. Find A Grave: Memorial #117533671
