Mary W. Starlin was born April 1, 1818 in Crosby, Hamilton Co., Ohio. She was the daughter of Israel Starlin and Christina Wilkins.

Biography

In Mexican War Pension Application of Mary W Merrill, Act of Jan 29, 1887; filed 1887; NARA Master Number 773348 Mary Merrill states the following: "I was married to John Dowty when I was about 14 years old at Indiana Creek, Riley Twp. Ohio—County not remembered. I was married by Squire Raysdale. My maiden name was Starlin. My parents were present, my father’s name was Israel Starlin, he is dead." Statement date, August 25, 1891, Kill Creek, Kansas. She also states that, "John Dowty died, can’t tell you when—we had been married only a year. He died on Indiana Creek. My brother and sister know he is dead, no one else. Yes. The “Motts” know of the marriage and his death. No one else."

On the 1860 Hamilton County Ohio, Harrison Township Census, Mary is shown as having an occupation of weaver. (In a deposition Mary provided to the U.S. Government vouching her sons Civil War disability, Mary identifies her profession as a carpet weaver.)

Found on the United States Census 1870 Census in Oskaloosa Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. 8/4/1870 - 338-Line 11(aged 52), no reference to husband James. Living with her at this time are James, 24, day laborer; William, 20, working on Farm; Mary Margaret, 18, At home. Living close by is Michael Starlin aged 50, born in Ohio with his family, Eunice,51; Priscilla, 20; Carlton, 18. (Michael Starlin is Mary's brother).

Mary is found on the 1880 United States Census, Mount Ayr Township, Osborne County Kansas, with her sons William aged 30 and James Aged 33, Mary aged 60 (showing divorced in this census) ED 214 Page 28 Line 2-4.

Mary 77, and her son James, 49 are found on the 1895 Census of Kansas, Osborne County, Mt Ayr Township, Kill Creek Post Office showing moved into Kansas from Iowa.

Found on the United States Census 1900 Mount Ayr Township, Osborne County, Kansas, ED 108, Sheet 6a Line 31. Mary is shown to be 82 years old having been born in Ohio & is a widow, not working. Living with her at this time is her son, James (not married)

Harrison Press, June 08, 1905 Pg 3:1. After an Illness of long duration, the mother of D.R. Merrill died at 9 o'clock Tuesday, at the home of her son James, about four miles east of here. She was 87 years old and during her long life was a loving and faithful mother. Will Slete will have charge of the funeral which will take place at her late home a 1 o'clock this afternoon. Burial at the Baptist Cemetery.

Harrison Press June 15, 1905 Pg 2:3 FUNERAL OF MRS. MERRILL. The funeral last Thursday of Mrs. Mary Merrill was largely attended, and the sympathy felt for the relatives was universal, the deceased being known as a faithful and devoted mother, and a good neighbor. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. M.L. Buckley, and Wm. Slete had charge of the burial. Mary Merrill was born April 1, 1818 in Crosby township, Hamilton County, Ohio and died June 6, 1905. Her maiden name was Miss Mary Starlin. She was married to James Merrill in 1839. To them were born 7 children, 5 sons and 2 daughters. Of this number two are dead, one daughter, Lydia, and one son, Michael. Four sons and one daughter survive her, David, Isreal, James & William, and Mary Margaret, now Mrs. Comstock, of Iowa. At her death she was aged 87 years 2 months and 5 days.
