Joseph Starnes, the eldest son of Joseph Starnes and Katherine Carlock, was born in SW Virginia, near the North Carolina border. In April 1779, he escaped from the Indians though his uncle and brother-in-law didn't. He was a scout for the American troops during the Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of King's Mountain. He later moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and then to Burke County. He died about 1840.
