Biography

Hannah Starnes' parents are Joseph Starnes, Sr and Katherine Carlock. [1]

Many have, incorrectly, added the name of "Ellsworth" to her name. There is a Hannah Starnes that married a Joseph Bennett and a Barbara Ellsworth that married a Joseph Bennett.... two different Bennett's but people keep combining the wive's names.

Research Notes

http://pages.swcp.com/~dhickman/journals/V5I4/mosesbennett.html "One Joseph Bennett, Jr. died in Pendleton County in 1810. He left a wife named Hannah and a large family of children. Nedra Brill in The Henkel Genealogical Bulletin, Spring 1992, cites family sources dating well into the 1800's, which say that this Joseph Bennett Jr. of Pendleton County actually married Hannah STARNES. Ms. Brill goes on to show that when it became apparent from this Joseph Jr.'s will (probated in Pendleton in 1810) that his wife was named HANNAH and not BARBARA, some researchers "switched" Doughman's Elsworth wife to this Joseph, and this is the apparent reason that a number of family group sheets circulate showing this Joseph Bennett with two marriages, one to Hannah Elsworth and one to Hannah Starnes.. Attaching a Hannah Elsworth wife to the Joseph Bennett Jr. who died in Pendleton County in 1810 is not valid. It is not founded on any evidences and amounts to an attempt to "force fit" several pieces of information together when they in fact should not be associated."

Morton's History of Pendleton County calls the wife of this Joseph Bennett Jr. Hannah SLEASON, and in 1872 family record prepared by one Meg Bennett shows the wife of Joseph Bennett as Hannah STERNS, and gives a list of their children. Moses Bennett is not among them. The Brill article cites the 1830s ledger book of Jonathan M. Bennett to show that Joseph Bennett married Hannah STARNES. While the ledger book is a secondary source, and does not conclusively prove the maiden name of Mrs. Joseph Bennett, Jr., it should be remembered that no matter who she was there is NO reason to assign the maiden name of Elsworth to her.[2]

Another Bennett mistake that has continued to have a seemingly immortal life of it's own came from The Henckel Genealogy, and The Henckel Genealogical Bulletin. Without going into the myriad of details, the wife of Joseph Bennett Jr. was given as Hannah Elsworth. This has been refuted and corrected in both The Henckel Bulletin and this journal, and in much correspondence by those who continue to advance the research on the Bennett family. However, some researchers continue to carry the Elsworth name on their sheets; it should be removed. [3]

Hannah Starnes Bennett does not have the name Ellsworth. Many people have gotten VERY confused over the several Joseph Bennett's in the same area of Virginia around the same time. There is a Joseph Bennett that married a Barbara Ellsworth.

Hannah was born in 1747. She passed away in 1814.

Sleason-1 and Starnes-462 appear to represent the same person because: These two Profiles represent the same individual despite the two different last names. Joseph Sleeth Bennett, Jr married a Hannah Starnes (which has been proven) but there was one old reference out there stating Sleason (along with Sternes). The documentation for Starnes far outweighs against Sleason and Sternes. Also, many are relying on the Don Norman files too heavily for this family which goes against Genealogical Standards since he clearly states there is zero proof for his notes. These should be merged and the alternative names of Sleason and Sternes added as "other last names." Thanks!

Ellsworth-173 and Starnes-462 appear to represent the same person because: These two Profiles are a duplicate. At first, it may not appear to be because of the last names: Elsworth and Starnes. Elsworth is, in fact, incorrect on the Profile as Birth Name. It should be Starnes. There are two Joseph Bennett's in the area. One married a Starnes, the other married an Elsworth. MANY have wrongly combined the two names as one person. There is information on both of these Profiles detailing why they are the same person. Thanks!

A quick note: Last name at Birth should be Starnes and not Elsworth. Hannah never married a Starnes or an Elsworth. Thanks! Sandy
