Biography

Sarah Ada Starnes was born Dec 15 1875 in Calhoun County Mississippi to parents James William Starnes (1850-abt.1884) and Susan Emily (Black) Starnes (1852-abt.1889). Ada married John Hanson Isom Black on December 17, 1899 in Yalobusha, Mississippi She died in Calhoun County, Mississippi on Sept 17 1956 and is buried in Turkey Creek Cemetery, Calhoun County, MS.[1]

JACKSON DAILY NEWS: JACKSON, MISS.: SEPTEMBER 18, 1956

SARA A. BLACK WATER VALLEY, MISS.(Special)--Service were to be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Turkey Creek Baptist Church, near Bruce, Miss., Calhoun County, for Mrs Sara Ada Starnes Black, 82, who died Monday. Interment was to be in the church cemetery with Hale Funeral Home of Water Valley, Miss., Yalobusha County was in charge. A lifelong resident of Calhoun County, Miss., Mrs. Black leaves her husband, John Hanson "Isom" Black; three daughters, Mrs. L. A. Tubbs and Mrs. Paul Williams of Water Valley, Miss. and Mrs. Enoch Downs of Shaw, Miss.; two sons,Edgar Black of Water Valley, Miss. and Verley Black of Vardaman, Miss.

Added note; Grandma changed her name before she married: Her birth name was Ali Mae Starnes. She married her first cousin John Hanson "Isom" Black on December 17, 1899 in Yalobusha County, Miss. (Records are at Water Valley, Miss.) Hale Funeral has recorded her birtday as December 5, 1873, info given by John Hanson Isom Black.
