Biography

Ruth was Cherokee.

Ruth Starr was born December 25, 1799 in the Cherokee Nation, the daughter of Caleb Starr, a white man and Nancy Harlan, a Cherokee and grand-daughter of Nancy Ward. [1] Ruth married John Bean, who was the grand-son of William Bean and Lydia (Russell) Bean in February, 1815.

On April 9, 1818, Ruth's husband John Bean took a reservation of land at Hiwassie "in right of his wife" under the Treaty of 1817. [2] Around 1834, the family removed to Washington County, Arkansas, and from there to the "Flint District" in Indian Territory as "Old Settlers." Ruth and children Lucinda, John, Mark, Caleb, Nancy, Rachel, Joseph, and Susannah are listed next to one another living in the Flint District on the 1851 "Old Settler" roll. [3]

Ruth and John had twelve children:

Margaret Bean, born February 29, 1816, married John Gott;

Caleb Starr Bean, born November 1, 1820, married Mary Ann Thompson;

Nancy "Nannie" Bean, born December 8, 1821, married first Ellis Starr, married second, Ben Goss;

Rachel Alzira Bean, born December 29, 1826, married first Josiah Mathias, married second Calvin H. Wilson;

John Ellis "Chief" Bean, born March 10, 1827, married Henrietta Dannenburg;

Joseph McMinn Bean, born May 11, 1828, married Sarah Finley;

Susanna Deborah Bean, born May 4, 1830, married James Warren Adair;

Sarah Emily Bean, born May 4, 1830 (twin of Susanna) married (in the Cherokee Nation) Benjamin F. Goss;

Lucina Bean, born September 15, 1834, married John Harrison Paden;

Mark Bean, born September 26, 1842, married Victoria Wright [4]

John died June 28, 1857. Ruth died May 1, 1895 and is buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Adair County, Oklahoma. [5]
