William changed his name to John William Stearns when he got to Australia. His brother John Michael Stearns continued to live in England.
In 1851, two brothers, John and William, were still near home in Barrington, Cambridgeshire. William, not John, came to Australia on the Plantagenet of 1854....
William Stearns, 28y, farm labr, b. Barrington Cam to John & Zebby, both dead, c/e, reads, no relations in colony, good health, no complaints, paid 1 pound to AJ Act.
But once settled, William used the name John, the name of his father and brother, and made William his middle name.

6752. John Stearns, of Blandford, laborer. Mr. Morris, assignee.
The Maitland Weekly Mercury of Saturday 6 October 1917, under the title of "MURRURUNDI" has this to say:
A very old resident of the district passed away last Saturday, at the great age of 93; in the person of Mr. John Stearns, sen., of Blandford. When he first came to the colony he farmed for a time at Wollombi, where he married, and after some years took up railway work. For the past thirty years he had been engaged in contract work on Harben Hale for the late Mr. F. R. White. He was a zealous character, and was much respected. His wife predeceased him fifteen years ago, and five of a family of ten children survive him to mourn their loss. His remains were interred in the Murrurundi general cemetery on Sunday, Rev. Canon Rushforth conducting the funeral service.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
