Biography

John was born on 13 Dec 1810 in Middlebury, Addison, Vermont. He was the son of Paul Stearns and Lucy (Kneeland) Stearns.

He studied theology, taught and preached until 1838; was an editor and publisher until 1848; Hon. A. M., Rutgers Coll., 1855; LL. D., Grinnell Coll., Iowa, 1890. Among his literary works are "Wreaths of Wild Flowers", "The Puritan as a Character in History", "The Bible in Harmony with Nature", and "Germs and Developments of the Laws of England". He was a lawyer, of New York City, who died of acute bronchitis.

He married first Emeline H Adams on 3 Sep 1836.

He married second Sarah J. Valentine on 16 Dec 1865 in Williamsburg, Kings, New York, United States.

He married third Katie _____ on 23 Aug 1889.

He died in 1899 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York.
