[Notes: (1) Son Paul's baptism is recorded as son of Daniel and Elizabeth, not Hannah. [1] (2) Daughter Bettee's death is recorded from her gravestone as Oct. 1770, [1] however it is October, 1778, transcribed incorrectly. See her guardianship record, aged 1 in April, 1777, died before May, 1779. [2]]

Biography

Daniel Stearns, son of Thomas and Lydia Stearns, was born at Lunenburg, Massachusetts on July 13, 1749 [3] and baptized at Leominster, Massachusetts on bap. September 3, 1749. [1]

Daniel married Hannah Wetherbee on October 26, 1769 at Lunenburg. [1]

Daniel died at Leominster, Massachusetts on June 4, 1777. [1]

His estate inventory was submitted on July 2, 1777 as assessed at L462: 1: 12 with L370 being real estate. [4]

On July 7, 1777, widow Hannah Stearns notified the court that she declined administration of her husband's estate and requested that 'her father Thomas Stearns', be appointed. Thomas Stearns posted bond and then was appointed adminstrator of Daniel's estate. [4]

Thomas Stearns, as administrator was ordered by the court to pay the following sums from the estate balance of L54: 13: 5: 1, to Daniel's heirs, or their guardians on April 7, 1778, as follows:

  • to the widow - L 14: 7: 5: 3
  • to eldest son Daniel, a double share - L13: 15: 2
  • to the remaining three children- L6: 17: 7 each [4]
On April 7, 1778, Thomas Stearns was appointed guardian to Daniel Stearns, a minor aged six years, son of Daniel Stearns of Leominster, deceased. [5]

On April 7, 1778, Thomas Stearns was granted guardianship of Betty Stearns, a minor aged one year, daughter of Daniel Stearns of Leominster deceased. On May 3, 1779, Thomas gave a final accounting of his guardianship of Betty, now deceased including the amounts paid for the doctor, for digging her grave and her coffin. [2]

After his death his widow Hannah married Samuel Hale Jr. on July 8, 1784. [1]

On October 29, 1784, one third of Daniel's real estate, consisting of a 218 acre farm was set off to his widow Hannah, now Hannah Hale, as well as personal items of furniture and a cow, acknowledged by Thomas Stearns, adminstrator and guardian, Samuel Hale and Hannah Hale. [4]

Hannah died at Leominster on August 22, 1789, aged 38. [1]
